Backyard macro series

2024 – present

This series features ants from my back yard, the tiny (2mm) black and brown variety residing under the Hills Hoist. I experimented on these ants with my new Laowa super-macro lens that offers up to 5x magnification. While the quality is incredible, a tiny bump of the camera means major movement at the pointy end so stability was aided with a remote-controlled shutter. This also had the advantage of less disturbance of the ant activity. Using a completely manual lens to photograph tiny fast moving insects was challenging, so ten reasonable images from around a hundred felt acceptable. To suggest the urban setting, I montaged the ants with details from the back yard such as curly passion fruit vine or a garden seat’s woven fabric.
